Today, technology is advancing rapidly. New technical inventions are taking place at an even greater pace. These inventions open up a new field of subject-matter for protection under IP Law. Intellectual Property law provides umbrella protection to new inventors through patenting. A patent protects those lines of process, products that are novel and are capable of being copied.

According to the figures of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released this year, of the total 1.56-lakh applications for international patents received, the U.S. was topped the list with 52,280, followed by Japan with 27,731, whilst India’s applications amounted to 686.
The total number of patent filings by Indian residents is three per million population as against a world average of 250. The number of patents granted in 2007-08, which is the 1st year of India’s 11th Five-Year Plan, compares well with the total number awarded during the entire period of the 10th Five-Year Plan, which was just 17,618. |

The basic requirements to pursue a career in this field are a degree in a technology-related field and having the ability to pass the Patent Bar Exam. The field of patent law is wide open to Biologists, Chemists, Engineers, Computer Scientists, and many other science /technology professionals.
After becoming a Patent Agent, employment opportunities are available in writing and prosecuting patent applications at law firms, technology transfer offices, biotech or engineering corporations, and government institutes. |
